The Valley's October Surprise!

Here we go again...the politicians want an October Surprise, so here is my version:

OCTOBER 1, 2012
- FROM KMPH FOX 26...The University Police Department at Fresno State arrested and turned over to Fresno PD a man (today) after he perched in a tree in the Free Speech Area of campus and refused to climb down despite repeated orders from police and firefighters, the university said in a news release. University Police say the man -- wearing only underwear -- was first reported acting erratically inside the Henry Madden Library before he went outside and climbed the tree across from the Free Speech Area stage near some student organizations' booths, university spokesman Tom Uribes said. As a crowd gathered, University Police sealed off a portion of the area and spent more than an hour trying to coax the man to come down a ladder raised near the tree trunk. The confrontation ended when the man stepped toward a ladder, which, after he balked, was knocked aside by officers, Uribes said. They grasped the man and brought him to the ground. University Police took the man to a hospital after he complained of pain. He was then taken to the Fresno County Jail. The man's name has not been released. It's not known if he's a student at Fresno State. Details on what charges might be filed were not immediately available. That was not in the Science Department’s lesson plan!

OCTOBER 2, 2012
- At about 10:30am, Clovis Police were dispatched to the WinCo at Peach and Ashlan, where the occupants of a minivan and a truck were harassing a customer in hate crime fashion. - At about 10:05pm, Fresno Police were dispatched to the area of Pontiac and Delno for a disturbance involving a naked man.

OCTOBER 4, 2012
- At about 11:30am, the Fresno Fire Department responded to 4264 N. Katy, in the area of Ashlan and Blythe for a major residential fire. Here are two reports on the incident:

>From “KFSN ABC-30“:
Investigators have determined the cause of an explosion at a Northwest Fresno home. They now believe it was caused by a meth lab inside a house near Ashlan and Blythe. Firefighters responded around noon Thursday after a loud explosion was heard and flames as high as 30 feet in the air could be seen. One man was inside the house at the time and suffered burns to 75 percent of his body. Two others were not injured. Investigators say the suspects started renting the home 30 days ago and they believe they may be tied to a Mexican drug cartel.

>From “The Fresno Bee":
The blast blew off the back walls and set the home on fire. The garage door at the front of the house was blown off its frame. Neighbors said the explosion felt like an earthquake. Windows of at least five neighboring houses were shattered by the force of the blast. The house next door suffered extensive damage to the roof and kitchen as windows and doors were smashed and kitchen cabinets were blown off walls. "I was laying in bed and I saw a big ball of fire," said the neighbor, who identified himself as Johnny and declined to give his last name. "My wife and kids started screaming in the other room." The man said he got his family out of their house uninjured. The American Red Cross was assisting the family of four with shelter, food and water.

OCTOBER 5, 2012
- At about 12:02pm, Fresno Police were dispatched to the 4400 block of West Terrace for a man in front of his house, masterbating.

- At about 2:05pm, the Fresno Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial warehouse fire at Maple & Turner.

>From "The Fresno Bee":
A fast-moving three-alarm fire Friday in southeast Fresno destroyed five vacant warehouse buildings and sent a plume of smoke billowing hundreds of feet into the mid-afternoon sky. It took more than 40 firefighters close to an hour to get the fire at Maple and Turner avenues under control. There were no injuries, but the buildings burned to the ground. When firefighters arrived after receiving a call at 2:05 p.m., they could not enter the buildings, which were filled with smoke and with fire licking out. The buildings were collapsing as firefighters arrived. "The fire got very big, very fast," said department spokesman Koby Johns. The cause of the fire was not known Friday afternoon and no damage estimate was available. He said the buildings were wood-framed with aluminum walls and that the wood was extremely dry. The warehouses were in the middle of a residential area, and firefighters considered evacuating residents. No neighboring homes were affected by the fire, but the intense heat melted a trash container in front of a Turner Avenue home across the street. Because of the number of firefighters battling the blaze, the Fresno City Fire Department had to suspend medical-aid calls for a short time during the initial stages of the fire, Johns said. The warehouses covered 10,000 to 20,000 square feet and appeared to have few items inside, Johns said. The buildings were once part of a box plant operated by American Forest Products' manufacturing division. Neighbors said the plant closed about 20 years ago. A nearby resident who identified himself only as Cisco said people were working in the warehouses Friday but left about 45 minutes before firefighters were called. He said neighbors were told that the property was being restored as a farmers market.

During the incident, a firefighter radioed the crew of Truck #10, warning them of a motorist using the sidewalk to drive around the fire apparatus parked in the street, and was coming right for the Truck #10 rig...luckily, the car missed hitting Truck #10. Unknown if the motorist received a ticket from Fresno Police.

OCTOBER 23, 2012
- At about 11:28am, Fresno PD was dispatched to the area of Shields & Maroa for a Hispanic male in a camouflage jacket walking in the westbound lanes of Shields, flipping off passing cars going around him.

OP\ED: California High-Speed Rail

The California High-Speed Rail plan was voted in favor of on Thursday by the State Assembly, and voted in favor of by the State Senate...and the bill is now on it’s way to the desk of Governor Jerry Brown, which he is expected to sign.

I do think that there should be some sort of High Speed Rail, but the way that everything is going, the more I think we should not build it...at least, not now...not in the current state of the global economy.

In the various Central Valley counties that the HSR will go through, there are going to be some things affected other than street closures. The relocation or removal of the below could be detrimental to the valley communities that they are in.

Fresno County:
>In Fresno, the Van Ness Arch*, located on Van Ness near Los Angeles (which has been there since 1917) will be torn down, or relocated, and will lose it’s historical status either way.

>In Fresno, a three mile stretch of Highway 99 from Clinton to Ashlan will be re-routed one hundred feet to the west, and will affect nearby businesses (like Dakota Park Storage, and others) and owned land, including homes. Dakota Park has only been in business for five years. AND how will trucking be affected by this? Highway 99 is a major trucking route, and the truckers will detour all the way to I-5. If they do, they will add on the cost to the goods that they transport.

>In a May 2, 2012 Fresno Bee article (Page A3) [http://www.fresnobee.com/2012/05/01/2820794/local-tea-party-to-host-high-speed.html], there was a map depicting other businesses that will be taken out by High Speed Rail. These include EZ Trip Truck Stop (formally Klien’s), Riverside Nursery, Astro Motel, Hacienda*, UPS hub (at McKinley & 99), a state Parole office, OK Produce, Fresno Rescue Mission (a business that helps the homeless), Alert-O-Lite, Dakota Park Storage, and others. AND, revealed by KGPE CBS 47, the Forestierre Underground Gardens* (threats of cave-ins due to nearby jack-hammering). The owner of the truck stop states that if he moved to another site, it would cost $15 million, which will be passed on to customers. The business employs 120 people. The HSR will even run right through Fresno’s historic Chinatown (including the Central Fish Company), uprooting businesses that have been in the families for generations.

(*= Landmark...local or state)

Kern County:
>In Bakersfield, a century-old high school will have to be relocated. [http://articles.latimes.com/2011/oct/22/local/la-me-bullet-train-20111023][http://www.bakersfield.com/news/business/economy/x706716786/Students-ask-high-speed-rail-officials-to-avoid-BHS]
>In Bakersfield, Bakersfield College is reporting that they will have to be relocated.

Kings County:
>Local officials do not want High Speed Rail to come through their county...PERIOD!!! The county official are taking the NIMBY (Not In My BackYard) approach.

Madera County:
>The community of Chowchilla will be literally split in two.
>May 14: The City of Chowchilla is suing the CHSRA for questions about the Environmental Impact Report.
>May 14: The Madera-Merced Farm Bureau is suing the CHSRA for not addressing the effects on farm lands.

Numerous homes, businesses, and farmland (some in families for multiple generations) statewide will be plowed through\over. Owners of the homes, businesses, and land will NOT be fairly compensated. They will be forcibly removed from their land with imminent domain.

Tickets to ride the HSR one-way from Los Angeles to San Francisco are projected to cost approximately $250-300...as much as a ticket for a major airline flight. Any employment promised is only temporary until the system is built...then you will be pink-slipped.

The word “TARP” was mentioned at a press conference in Fresno a few months ago... “T.A.R.P.” is a TAX through the “Troubled Assets and Relief Program.” HSR will cost $68 billion of YOUR tax dollars to build (with the San Francisco to Los Angeles section costing half of that alone). Most Californians, even though they voted for the HSR in 2008, now regret their vote after learning of the high costs, and now are against the project, because they feel that they as taxpayers have been...RAILROADED!

It is not just California paying for this...much of the money is coming from the federal government. Both are severely in debt. The Sacramento Bee reported on April 18, 2012 that California will be $16 Billion in the hole next fiscal year. Stockton, Mammoth Lakes, and a few others have declared bankruptcy...and there have been closures of various California State Parks due to budget cuts.

Like other local governments, the City of Fresno, a city of over 500, 000 people, the fifth largest city in the state, only has had cuts to the police and fire departments (at one point, there was the consideration to shutter two fire stations). Due to these cuts, service has been affected. At a major four-alarm fire recently, the Fresno Fire Department had to request assistance from the county, and had to resort to not answering medical-aid calls. Most community centers are now run by non-profits...and some parks no longer have a regular maintenance schedule. Some community swimming pools have been dry for more than three years, commercial waste pick-up has been contracted out, and residential pick-up may follow suit. The city is no longer filling pot-holes, and graffiti abatement is spotty at best. 18 months ago, the city busses raised the fares to $1.25, and rumors of another fare increase are looming.

The United States debt clock passed $15 Trillion ($15,692,368,067,305.23 in US debt...that means that every man, woman and child in the United States currently owes almost $52, 000 for their share of the U.S. debt), and a budget has not been passed...again...for the fourth straight year.

There are plenty of things in the communities that HSR will affect that the monies for HSR can improve...the most being fixing our road systems (fixing street lighting that has been hit by copper thieves...filling pot-holes, fixing roads and bridges, and adding monies into municipal transit systems...such as buses. Fresno wants to implement a Bus Rapid Transit line, but does not have the funds to do so. Some monies from HSR can go for this, along with some funds from Measure C.

“MAYDAY! MAYDAY!”

APRIL 23, 2012
-Fresno Fire was called out to an apartment at The Parks At Fig Garden this morning at about 3:00am for smoke in an apartment, and the female tenant would not evacuate the apartment. When the firefighters arrived, they discovered that they were out at the location a few hours prior for the same call. The police were called, and both tried to get the woman to open the door. Both the police and fire departments labeled the woman as 5150. The woman even had the gall to call the police to report her door is being kicked in, and was yelling at the police call-taker. (Lady, you’re the one that called them!) On the next call, the fire department will respond...with the police. She apparently is long overdue for a 72-hour psych hold.

-For the second time in three days, Fresno fire was called out to two different electrical fires at houses, and find a little something extra growing in the attics. The first call was at Angus & Swift (near Fresno & Ashlan) early Saturday morning. The second call came at around 11:15pm on April 23, 2012 at Wathen and Wheeler (near Polk & Herndon) for the same thing. Both were caused by grow lights overloading circuits, causing small fires. Upon firefighter discovery, the police were requested in both incidents.

May 1, 2012
Fresno Police were alerted to a bank robbery at the Bank of America at Shaw and Angus across from Fashion Fair. The police had a description of the woman, and possibly a lock on a tracking device hidden in the money. They tracked the woman down to the PG&E office building in Downtown, and took her, along with an accomplice (getaway driver). The reason why the woman robbed the bank? To pay her PG&E bill.

MAY 25, 2012
On the morning of May 25, 2012, Fresno Police officers turned into cowboys when a bull (a male cow) got loose, and ran through the southern end of Downtown. Several schools were notified of the incident in case of lockdown. The bull ended up in the backyard of a house on Tower Street, where officers and the SPCA wrangled and contained the animal.

MARCH 11, 2012
-A Fresno Police officer ran the plate of a vehicle (in an unknown part of the city). Apparently, he checked on the driver of the said vehicle for suspicious activity...the driver was “making out” with the vehicle.

MARCH 22, 2012
-Fresno Police were called to a normally quiet Northwest Fresno gated condo complex in the area of West and Bullard where a middle-aged man (Age 59) was shot to death by an elderly (Age 74) neighbor just because the victim’s Border Collie went kept getting into the neighbor’s yard. The victim and the suspect neighbor had been feuding for five years. The suspect did flee the scene, and was spotted at River Park’s Romano’s Macaroni Grill. The police moved in, but the suspect shot and killed himself, making this incident a murder\suicide. The dog(s), you ask? It’s\they are okay. The names of the two subjects have been revealed in the media (but I am withholding them), and are well known in the community...the suspect was an agent from DiBuduo & DeFendis Insurance Agency, and the victim owned Franko’s In Full Bloom Florist Shop.

MARCH 23, 2012
-At about 12:15am, Fresno Police were following a white Mercedes occupied by an African-American male wanted for domestic violence and DUI on eastbound Barstow from Millbrook at a distance (no pursuit). After the officers requested that CSUF PD and Clovis PD be notified of the vehicle, the car crashed into the Fresno State’s Gibson Farm Market at Chestnut and Barstow. The suspect immediately gave up. Upon searching the vehicle, police found a stolen handgun. An ambulance was requested for the suspect, who had some back pain. CSUFPD did respond, since the accident took place on campus. The Farm Market was severely damaged, but officials vow to rebuild\repair, then re-open. Students from the campus had projects that they were to sell, but those projects were destroyed. There were also a half-dozen fruit and nut baskets made for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Fresno Regional teams...those too were destroyed.

MARCH 29, 2012
-Fresno Fire Department was called out to a possible water main break at Fresno near P Street (not City Hall), at a OB\GYN office...that's right...their water broke!

What We Have Here Is Failure Of The Brain!

JANUARY 5, 2012
-Turns out that the “carjacking victim”-turned getaway driver of the Clovis Kohl’s shoplifting call, is actually Patrick Foster...a corrections officer at the Madera County Jail!

JANUARY 7, 2012
-In order to get a ride, a man told his friend that his (the man’s) vehicle was hit by a train near Constance and Fremont (Santa Fe tracks, just south of Herndon). Showing obvious concern, the friend called 9-1-1, and the police, fire, and medics showed up. The police could not find a scene, so fire and medics were canceled, but the fuzz still wanted to talk to the “man” and the friend, cause the “man” had some explaining to do.

JANUARY 9, 2012
-Kohl’s Update: Last night, some individuals were caught shoplifting from the River Park location. Tonight, just after 7pm, there was a grab and run from the Kohl’s at Shaw & Marty. Remember, class...K.O.H.L.S. stands for Kleptomaniacs On Hand Lifting\Looting Stuff. A couple days later (January 11?), police were called out to the Riverpark location again for broken window, and the next day (January 12?) for another shoplifting call.

JANUARY 14, 2012
-At about 6:20pm, there were reports to the California Highway Patrol and Fresno Police of a man running across Freeway 41 between Herndon and Bullard with a knife. At about 6:30pm, he was reportedly hiding in some bushes about .25mi. north of Barstow, and the item he has could possibly be a pipe.

JANUARY 15, 2012
>Overnight, local law enforcement responded to three calls...

-Fresno Police and SCCCD Police responded to the 600 block of west Cambridge (near Fruit & Weldon) for what sounds like a party gone bad. Three victims were stabbed, then the suspects fled to a house down the street.

-A few minutes later, Fresno Police and the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to Shaw and Freeway 41 for a report of a woman who fell out of a car, and there were people covering her up with towels and blankets...and the victim may be deceased. The vehicle that the woman was in, was turning from Shaw onto southbound Freeway 41. The woman was confirmed to be deceased.

-The third call, Fresno Police and CSUF (Fresno State) Police responded to the Taco Ball on Cedar between Bulldog and Shaw for a report of a man down, bleeding from the head, and barely breathing. Upon arrival, the man was breathing, and had a bad head injury. Apparently the man lives nearby.

JANUARY 21, 2012
-Fresno Police (along with Skywatch) responded to the Kohl’s at Riverpark for a shoplifting call at about 5:10pm, and were advised that the man was ripping tags off of the clothing.

FEBRUARY 15, 2012
-A 22 year-old woman was seen running down Fresno Street near Palo Alto (south of Herndon), naked. What is worse is that her 2-3 year-old niece was in a field near the Foxwood Apartments, naked as well, and was attacked by her aunt. The girl’s mother was in jail, and was in the care of the aunt...but, the child in now in protective custody.

FEBRUARY 19, 2012
-At about 4pm, a shoplifter was contacted by store security at Wal-Mart (Shaw & Peach, Clovis). The suspect was trying to steal BB guns or air-soft rifles, and told security that he was hunting demons as a soldier of God.

Land Of The Rising Idiots!

JANUARY 3, 2012
-A couple tidbits of information from New Year's Eve were released:
147 people were arrested for DUI in the "Avoid The 21" campaign throughout the Central Valley. Local police also responded to over 170 "shots fired" calls for IDIOTS shooting off their firearms. Remember...what goes up, must come down.

-Three individuals shoplifted from the Kohl's at the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis. The initial report was that the two carjacked another person, and forced him to drive to some apartments in the area of Peach and Shaw. Turns out that the carjacking report was false, and the driver of the vehicle WAS the getaway driver for the shoplifters. All three have been arrested.

>>>I happen to live near the Kohl's at River Park...police are called out there for shoplifters at least 2-4 times per week. My acronym for K-O-H-L-S is "Kleptomaniacs On Hand Lifting (or Looting) Stuff."

JANUARY 4, 2012
-At about 1:40am, Fresno Police and Fresno Fire were dispatched to a residential building at Emerson and Charles (behind the Broadway Faire theater at Shaw & Valentine) for a car on top of a roof of an apartment, and the vehicle was smoking (about to catch on fire). The driver of the vehicle leg-bailed wearing only boxer underwear, and was later found in the area of Shaw and Marks. Police deduce that the vehicle was speeding on the road, hit some rocks and a tree stump, and was launched onto the roof of the apartment. Police evacuated the apartment as a precaution, the occupant thought there was an earthquake.
