Fresno Fire responded to T&V Market at Fresno & Clinton for what the reporting party described as a roof collapse. When FFD showed up, the ceiling panels did fall (but the roof was structurally sound), and the windows at the front of the business were blown out. It is unknown what caused the "explosion.”
DECEMBER 16, 2011
At 4:22pm, a car fire started in a very large service building at Future Ford\Kia (formally Decker Ford) at 920 W. Shaw Ave. between Freeway 168 and Willow leads to several explosions, and a three or four alarm (although a media outlet reported two) response from multiple agencies.
Due to the emergency vehicles parked in the roadway, Shaw from Chestnut to Willow and Willow from Shaw to San Gabriel are closed. Westbound Shaw was re-opened about two hours later.
Fire crews are concerned about tons of flammable fuels from the cars inside the “fire building,” as well as stored fuels (fuel tanks...they have two 500gal. tanks). There were reports of power lines down as well. So far, no injuries have been reported, and all Ford employees were accounted for.
A cause is have been static electricity from repair technicians changing a gas tank in a vehicle on a lift, the gas tank dropped to the ground, sparking the fire. 70%-80 of the building is destroyed or severely damaged, with 20%-30% saved...although the business’ General Manager labeled the building as a total loss.
It was later revealed that damage to the building, the sixteen cars inside, and equipment is estimated at $1.5 million ($1, 500, 000). A total loss according to a Future Ford General Manager.
Forty-three firefighters responded, with CFD re-calling all off-duty personnel. First alarm was able to get in, and a responding Battalion Chief immediately had a second alarm pulled. Unfortunately, second alarm units had problems getting through grid-locked traffic, which helped the fire spread (quadruple in size for every minute).
Clovis Fire suspended medical calls, leaving it to American Ambulance for several hours, and Fresno Fire had sent a few units to cover the Clovis Fire stations.

FFD Stretched Thin
On the afternoon of June 26, 2011 the Fresno Fire Department worked two multi-alarm fires simultaneously.
One was a three-alarm apartment fire at Marks and Dakota, that may have been arson. When a member of the FFD was interviewing people, they witnessed some people quickly leaving the scene, so the police were called.
The other fire was at Arthur and Dennett (near Fruit and Olive in the Tower District) for a two-alarm garage fire. Inside the garage though, was ammunition that was being stored.
Due to the fact that seventeen companies within the city limits were on the two fire calls, only three companies were available, so the fire department was forced to suspend responses to medical-aid calls (leaving that to American Ambulance) until units could be freed up.
NOTE: Fresno FD also has a unit each in Kerman, Biola, and Kearney Park...I did not count those. Also, a unit or two from Clovis FD was also used to cover stations.
